Conquering Halti

How about visiting the Top of Finland? The highest point in Finland (1324 m.) is Haltitunturi or just Halti. Halti is situated in the middle of uninhabited wilderness about fifty kilometres northeast of Kilpisjärvi. If weather is favorable, magnificent view opens from the top of Halti, not only to the highest peaks of Finland but to the fells of Sweden and Norway as well.

Kilpissafarit organizes guided snowmobile excursions to Halti. You can reach the top sitting conveniently in the sledge on reindeer skins, or you may rent a snowmobile and do the driving yourself. The guides of Kilpissafarit are local people who know the wilderness in every detail and who are prepared for the perils of suddenly changing alpine weather. Warm clothing is a must for every participant of this excursion. The region between Kilpisjärvi and Halti is the most arctic area in Finland. Vegetation is scarce and there are no trees - only vast fields of snow and fells.

During the snowless season (July-September) it takes a whole week to hike from Kilpisjärvi to Halti and back. It is possible to take a shortcut via Norway, however. This way you can accomplish this memorable hike in just one day. There will be a 130 kilometre car ride from Kilpisjärvi to Guolasjärvi, Norway. As an extra bonus, during this 12 - 15 hour trip you will see magnificent fjords and fells of Norway along the road from Kilpisjärvi to Birttavarre. From Birttavarre to Guolasjärvi there is a small winding alpine road. Guolasjärvi is located on the North side of Halti massive. From Guolasjärvi to Halti there is a steep, rocky hiking trail to the top of Halti. The trail is not marked, and a local guide is necessary to make this trip safe and enjoyable.  Ask for prices and more information!

After reaching the top of Halti conquerors sign their names in "Halti book". On the way home there is a coffee break in the old Halti log cabin. After conquering Halti you will be granted a diploma, Haltin huiputtajan kunniakirja.
